When will we find love?
In college it seems as though no one is looking for commitment! Well at least when it comes to the guys. Have us girls become so accustomed and dependent upon the media to give us our ideas of love that we can’t seem to find what we are looking for? Will we ever find our prince charming or is all hope lost? I think the problem stems from all the fairytales and romance films that have these false portrayals of happy endings and love at first sight. There is no since of courtship or work ethic when it comes to love anymore. Everyone is looking for that “perfect mate” to come sweep them off their feet, but have no clue on how to find them. Along with the very unrealistic love portrayals we see in the media, we now have to worry about the over sexualized individual. Sex sells. I never heard a more true statement, but sex is also running our chances for love. Something that was once held at a high regard, is now presented as a carless act with no need for intimacy. From the records played on the radio to the video vixens of hip hop, sex is being glorified. Men (or young boys as I would like to call them) are learning that having lots of women and sex is cool. Of course it subliminal, just as the black man’s lust for the white woman, it’s embedded in their brains from the continuous pictures of the “Player.”
However, it’s not all on the male. Women are creating these high and very unrealistic expectations of who our companion should be, but the truth is we will never find Mr. Right. The Prince coming to rescue us is never going to happen! We need to rescue ourselves! We are not hopeless nor lacking the ability to fend for ourselves. The problem that both sexes are experiencing is asking for what we want. I believe we are all so afraid of rejection or stepping out of the imaginary boundaries we have created. Without taking the initiative to find what we want, we will never get it!!! Something worth having is worth working for. Putting in a little time to get to know the person you are interested in isn’t much to ask for. You have to build an identity together and not build off of others. Texting has completely ruined our idea of communication. There is no need for dates or late night walks to chat, when we can simply press a button. Spending money on someone who isn’t your girlfriend or boyfriend has become taboo. This is reflecting the worth that we have for love. Yet, everyone is searching for that ultimate love, no matter what they say.
So when will we as college students find love? When we realize that there is no age reserved for settling down, false myths are erased from our brain, and we “man-up” to face the possibility of rejection. The biggest problem we have to conquer is releasing the idea of the perfect mate. While we are wasting our time looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right, perfectly good matches are passing us by. I guess none of us know what we want.
